HIGH IMPACT WAYS TO GIVE
Many people choose to give from their assets – stocks, IRAs, and Donor-Advised Funds – to see even larger tax savings.
Giving Stock
Gifts of stock rather than cash have great benefits for you as a donor. You can avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciated value of your stock gift, and you share the growth of a strong stock market with a charity you know and love. To give stock, please contact Senior Director of Philanthropy Kenzie Durham at (213) 480-0809 x. 262 or email kdurham@acof.org.

Making a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA)
If you have an IRA and you’re 70½ or older, you’ll be making decisions about how to allocate the required minimum distribution. If it all goes to your bank account, you pay taxes on every dollar. Instead, ask your IRA custodian to set up a qualified charitable distribution to A Community of Friends (our EIN is 95-4203106) to reduce your taxable income and help power your favorite nonprofit. That’s a win-win solution.
Giving from your Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)
You’ve already had the foresight to optimize your tax situation by creating a Donor-Advised Fund, so now is a great time to make a grant from your DAF to A Community of Friends to invest in solving homelessness. Log in to your DAF account, search for ACOF (our EIN is 95-4203106), and recommend a grant to us. Easy as that!
GIVE WHILE YOU SHOP
Our partnership with Kroger means that every time you shop at Ralphs or Food4Less, they’ll make a donation to your chosen charity on your behalf.
Follow these steps to start giving while you shop:
- If you shop at Ralphs: Go to ralphs.com and if you shop at Food4Less: Go to the Food4Less Community Rewards page.
- You’ll be prompted to sign in or create an account.
- Make sure your favorite store location is selected in the top left corner (but don’t worry, all your purchases will generate a store donation to ACOF no matter which location you shop at).
- Once you’re logged in, go to My Account, select Community Contributions (this is what Ralphs calls it) or Community Rewards (which is the Food4Less wording) from the menu on the left-hand side.
- Type “A Community of Friends” into the prompt that says Find an Organization. Click on Enroll to confirm your choice. You’ll see a confirmation that you have successfully enrolled in Community Contributions.
- Once you’re enrolled, every eligible purchase you make at Ralphs or Food4Less results in the store making a donation to ACOF, automatically and at no cost to you.
If you shop at both stores, you’ll need to create two different online accounts, attached to different email addresses. Once you’ve done this, you can follow the steps above to start giving to ACOF. If you try to use the same login, you may get an error message saying that the program isn’t available in your area. If this happens, you just need to create another account with a different email address.
If you already have a physical loyalty card for either or both stores, it’s as easy as calling 1800-443-4438 and asking to enroll in the Community Rewards Program, selecting A Community of Friends as your chosen organization.
IN-KIND GIFTS
Many individuals and organizations support A Community of Friends by donating supplies and materials that are transformative to tenants’ lives, such as clothing, educational resources, and household items. To discuss opportunities, please contact Senior Director of Philanthropy Kenzie Durham at (213) 480-0809 x. 262 or email funddevelopment@acof.org.
If you would like to donate household items for new tenants moving into ACOF buildings, we have an Amazon wishlist that shows you what is needed to build a Welcome Home Kit. These kits include essential household items, from kitchenware and bedding to cleaning supplies and personal care products, all aimed at helping tenants settle in and feel truly at home from day one. We rely on generous donations from supporters like you to ensure these kits are fully stocked with everything needed to turn an empty apartment into a warm, welcoming space. Your contributions directly impact the comfort and well-being of our tenants as they embark on this new chapter in their lives.
PLANNED GIVING
